PTA VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT (PTAVTED) CENTRE

Federal Government Girls College Oyo was established in 1974 with a view to train and develop the girl child to contribute effectively to national development and assist to bridge the gender gap in access to education.

In its 47 years, FGGC Oyo has effectively carried out this mandate. It has trained over 50,000 girls some of whom are now leading and driving development both in Nigeria and in the diaspora. However, there is a need to align this mandate with the key United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched in 2015 (from the previous 8 Millennium Development Goals, MDGs).

In order to continue to give qualitative and more effective education in line with National and global aspirations, the Parent-Teacher Association of the College in collaboration with the College Management is establishing a Vocational Training and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (PTAVTED – CENTRE).

The intention of the PTA is to assist in expanding the capacity of the College to provide more entrepreneurship competencies for the students. Thus, this proposal highlights key needs for establishing the CENTRE. It covers proposed modalities for commencement and management of the CENTRE including its goals, target beneficiaries, key partners, and funding. It also covers important dates and timelines for key activities in the project that will empower young people in Oyo with opportunities for meaningful participation in society.

It is important to note from the outset that FGGC Oyo’s mandate aligns with both global and national aspirations. The establishment of this proposed CENTRE will address three key UN SDGs that are particularly relevant to education and FGGC Oyo’s mandate. These are SDGs 4, 5, and 8. SDG 4 seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, SDG 5 seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls while SDG 8 seeks to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. It will also address the National Technical and Science Education Policy 2018 and three key SDGs. And happily, the Management of the College has the vision to achieve the empowerment of the students at the College, and the PTA FGGC Oyo is determined to work with the Management through this proposed CENTRE to further position the college to deliver on its mandates. These connections are shown in Figure 1 below.
